Nursing Lab Skills Test Time Studies
Description:
Background: In KSU undergraduate Nursing courses, the Nursing students must attend lectures and practice lab sessions to learn new skills. Objective: The research team’s objective was to perform skills test time studies for different Nursing courses to determine the standard time (Tstd) to complete a skills test (i.e., two random select skills) and discover abnormalities in the time study data. Methods: During Spring, Summer, and Fall 2025 semesters, after obtaining informed consent, the research team collected videos of Nursing students performing their skills test. Two time studies were performed on each video for validation purposes. Data analysis and summary findings followed. Results: Preliminary findings show that mean Tstd varies by select skill. The nature and root cause of delays, instructor feedback, and biggest retest problem areas were explored. Conclusions: Time studies can be used to improve processes by identifying bottlenecks. The most common type of delay was student/lab instructor interactions.
Learning Objectives:
Apply a time study to a healthcare process.
Identify the nature and root cause of delays in the process.
